The ultimate cruising dinghy? - Testing Mary's SCAMP
Although under twelve feet long, this small sailing dinghy can comfortably accommodate four people on a daysail and a couple for overnighting or extended cruising. The SCAMP was created by New Zealand boat designer John Welsford for Small Craft Advisor Magazine in the USA, whose editors, Craig Wagner and Josh Colvin, were looking for a "Mini Microcruiser".
SCAMP number 1 was launched in 2010. Since then hundreds of plywood SCAMPs have been built all around the world, and a GRP model is available in the USA. The boat has developed a cult following, and Welsford considers it possibly his best design. The name SCAMP is fully capitalised, as it is an acronym for Small Craft Advisor Magazine Project.
Plans and kits of the SCAMP can be purchased from Duckworks in the USA, while complete fibreglass dinghies are available from Gig Harbor Boat Works in Washington state. In Europe, plywood kits have recently started to be produced by Newyd Marine in France.

AVEL DRO, my own boat, does not appear in this video.
Avel Dro is an Ilur designed by François Vivier, and built of clinker plywood by Les Charpentiers Reunis of Cancale in 1994. I bought her in France in 2003 to import her into the UK, and more recently returned her to France again. The design is based closely on the traditional inshore fishing boats of Brittany in the early years of the twentieth century - hence her simple boom-less lugsail rig and lack of a mainsheet horse, (sometimes controversial among my viewers). Although rare in Britain, Ilurs are relatively common in France. Modern Ilurs are slightly different from mine, as they have more built in buoyancy. The name Avel Dro is Breton, Avel = wind, Dro = to turn - so it means a whirlwind.

Windows that size were popular in victorian type building in the u.s. allowing more light when options for indoor lighting were still limited. They were of course single pane and the expanse of glass typically had visible irregularities or drooping. Blessings and Shalom

We don't really have many canals or navigable rivers in New Zealand, so mast tabernacles are not a consideration. It's mostly coastal or (depending where you live) on lakes, the sailing we do here.

I would make the mast hinge below and cut away a sleeve in the cabin top with a locking lid or pin for holing her up when in use. Then you can drop the mast back easely. Wouldnt be a big change but probebly a big advantage for single handed rigging youre pretty boat. Kind regards Machiel

Thank you Roger and Mary. Previous vids inspired me to spend a night with my 2 youngest on our 15' catboat just a week ago. After breakfast they declared that it should become a tradition! I was impressed (compressed), by how little room there is between the seat and the center board trunk, but we had a wonderful night on the water. Thanks for the inspiration! Have thought about a trolling motor as rowing the boat would probably require oars longer than the boat! Sculling perhaps? Thats an even longer oar. I'm impressed by the scamp, but have to wonder at the value of having the cuddy if you cant shelter under it? Hard to get to the bow. Dont want to take anything away, my boat does some things well, and others not so much, compromises have to be made. Thanks again for the inspiration, fair winds and following seas!

I am even more impressed with the scamp after watching your excellent demonstration. An electric motor has an immediate response with lots of thrust, which can save the day. An anchor is the most important thing, drop and wait till things improve. Cheers!

Where I sail the sea water temperature is never very high, so I simply keep them under the bottom boards. Were I to sail more often in the Med I might consider an ice box - but then I’d have to access ice.
